What is FGM?

Female genital mutilation (FGM) involves the removal of part or all of the female genitalia. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified FGM into 4 types:  

• Clitoridectomy: partial or total removal of the clitoris and/or the prepuce

• Excision: partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without excision of the labia majora

• Infibulation: the most extreme form, the removal of all external genitalia and the stitching together of the two sides of the vulva

• Other: all other harmful procedures done to the female genitalia for nonmedical purposes, for example, pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing. You may have noticed these practices, known as “pussy torture,” in porn and kink culture.

More Recently

1997: The Department of Health and Human Services found roughly 168,000 women had undergone or were at risk from FGM, based on census data from 1990. [x]

2004: A large-scale study of FGM in the U.S. was released by the African Women’s Health Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and found more than 227,000 American women were at risk of or had undergone FGM.

January 2016: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a new study about the number of women and girls who are at risk of FGM or have undergone FGM in the U.S. According to the study, an estimated 513,000 women and girls in the U.S. have undergone or are at risk of being subjected to FGM, which is more than three times higher than an earlier estimate based on 1990 data.
